Hey, I'm Caroline.
I'm Caroline NX Lee (@thecaroletter on Instagram), a hand-lettering artist, graphics and branding designer with a strong connection to writing and language. I am a recent Bachelor of Design graduate with honours, majoring in Graphics and Digital Media. I tell stories and give a narrative to words through emotion-driven, impactful hand-drawn designs. I am fluent in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, and have been a self-taught freelancer for 7 years, garnering an international portfolio of work. Based in Sydney, Australia, I am originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
I started hand-lettering as a 14-year-old simply because I wanted to create visual meaning for song lyrics I loved. There was no rhyme or reason to it, and I didn't even know hand-lettering was a thing! All I know is that it allowed me to express myself creatively under a traditional education system and helped me cope with my mental health. Though I studied (and failed) accounting in a school that wouldn't let me take art classes, I consistently won awards for design and handwriting competitions and managed to book my first international gig at age 16. I then knew this was my path for life, so I struggled against the odds and moved abroad to pursue a future in design.
As a freelance designer, I specialise in helping businesses with not only graphic design needs such as logos, visual branding identities, publication cover and layouts through hand-lettering, but also with social media marketing and content creation.
My hand-lettering experience adds to my design specialisation as I am able to bring touches of originality and authenticity to my work. It lends a personal touch of human warmth, making designs more memorable and personal.
